Yip Man Biography- by Xyril Millado
Yip Man, Ip Man or Ip Kai Man, was a Wing Chun Master and the teacher of Bruce Lee. He was a father of 2 sons and 2 daughters. His sons ended up to continue his work.
Yip Man was born on October 1, 1893, in Foshan, China. He was raised by his wealthy parents, being the third child in his family. He had quite an unpleasant early life since his parents were busy with work. He had to participate in whatever they do, but he did get to have traditional studying. Yip Man was allowed to study and practice Wing Chun under Chan Wah Shun at the age of 12. Wah Shun then died after 3 years of teaching Man.
When he was 15, Man moved to Hong Kong to study at St. Stephen's College. With his studies in the way, he still had time for training. After 9 years, he returned to Foshan and was employed as a police officer. In the 9 years time training for Wing Chun, he was ready to teach the art.
At the age of 56, he again fled back to Hong Kong when the Chinese Communist Party took over. He opened a Wing Chun School there and was announced the first martial artist to teach publicly and the Grandmaster of Wing Chun. The now deceased Bruce Lee was his best student. He started to train with him when he was 13.
Yip Man was married to Cheung Wing Ching until 1960 and had two sons that are both Wing Chun Masters right now. There isn't that much information on his daughters, Yip Ar Sum and Yip Ar Woon. His death took place on December 2, 1972, ending his suffering from cancer. After his death, movies about him were made such as the Ip Man trilogy, Ip Man: The Legend is Born, Grandmaster and the Ip Man: The Final Fight.
In Foshan, when the city was invaded by the Japanese, he fought the general of the invaders and won, but was shot on the shoulder because of his victory. Man, with his modified Wing Chun, saved his people multiple times. He is a man to be remembered and whose work is to be handed out.
