I didn't know that snow was so cold!

Image result for snow mt ruapehuOn Saturday, the 20th of August, My family and I woke up at 3 o’clock in the morning to get ready to go to Mt. Ruapehu. My aunt forced my mum and dad to go with them. We had to prepare our thermal clothing with us because it will be very cold there. I brought out a very thick coat and a hoodie. My mum brought out my dad’s cycling leggings for me to wear and then I wore my jeans over it.

Before very long, we set off to my aunt’s and uncle’s house so we could follow them to our destination in the car. However, they were still getting ready. They were packing lots of food into the trunk of their car.

When they were finished, my dad parked our car outside and we waited for them to come out. Two hours later, we weren’t in Auckland anymore, we stopped near a shop and my dad went out of the car to hang out with his friends. We watched Garfield in the car while we were waiting. A few minutes later, one of my dad’s friends came in the car and sat on the passenger seat to talk to my mum. After a while, dad came back to the car and we set off for another hour.

Eventually, we arrived at a gas station near Mt. Ruapehu. It was cold when we got out of the car. Then my uncle came into the car to give us some chocolate marshmallows. We went out from our cars to go to the toilet at the gas station. The girls went in the toilets first and while I was waiting, I ate some salted crackers. After they came out, it was my turn to go in. I felt scared because the lights were turning off every 10 seconds. After that, we went out of the shop and went back to our cars to head to our destination, Mt. Ruapehu. When we were getting close, I could see the snowy mountains!

As soon as we arrived there, we ate some of the food that my aunt and uncle had prepared. It was spicy Filipino dishes that I loved to eat. We ate all the food that our stomach could carry. After we ate, we joined the line in front of the shuttle bus to go to the top of Mt. Tongariro. We hopped on the bus after we got our tickets.

I was so scared because the bus was very close to the edge of the road. Thankfully, we arrived there safely. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot. My sister and I played in the snow on the side of the road. My sister borrowed one of my gloves and picked up some snow. I already knew what she was going to do so I ran away. She wanted to pick a snow fight with me.

Later on, we went to the ski lifts to go to the part of the mountain that had the most snow. The ski lift was really fun to ride on because I was high up in the air. After my sister went to the toilet, we went to look for my mum. We found them watching other people skiing. My mum told me to slide down a little slope with my shoes. I walked back up sideways and did it again.

After a few slides, a very kind Filipino family lent us some plastic sleds. I wanted to try it, so I got on one. I started off slow and when the slope became steeper I went down the hill really fast. When I was halfway down the hill, I went towards the sledding lane ridge and slid beside it. I pushed it with my foot to get away from it. I saw a stop sign, so I stopped my sled with my foot. When I went back up, I asked my sister to have a race with me and she agreed. I failed two times and lost the race. Soon, I stopped sledding and I just watched the others sled. A few minutes later, we sat down on the snow to have a chat. After a while, the others stopped sledding and we went back to the ski lifts to go back to where the shuttle was parked. We went back down the mountain, again I felt scared.

When we arrived, we took out some more food to eat. My sister and I brought out some spaghetti that we had prepared. We ate all the food so that we would last the 4-hours drive home. I had two helpings because it was very delicious, my dad had cooked this dish for my baby sister’s 11th month birthday. After that, we put all the leftovers in the car and set off home.

My favourite part of the day was when I was sledding because it was my first time and I haven’t tried it before. I will never forget that day!

Learning Intention: We are learning to use the correct language features in my recount.

Success Criteria: I know I can do this when I use sequencing words and past tense verbs to describe my trip to Mt. Ruapehu.
